HARRISBURG – The House and Senate passed a nearly $48 billion state budget today, said Rep. Dave Zimmerman (R-Lancaster/Berks), who voted against the inflated spending plan. Following the vote he issued this statement:

“This budget spends $2.7 billion more than the current fiscal year. It exceeds every prediction of what the state will have available in funds it takes in from taxes and other revenue generators, which means we will need to empty our reserves and Rainy Day Fund to pay for it. And, because the spending proposals in this budget are not one-time expenditures, it means taxes will need to be raised in the next few years to continue covering the new and increased spending.

“I am also highly disappointed about the missed opportunities to add accountability measures to many of the areas in this budget, including education. To blindly increase spending without ensuring how and where that money is specifically being used is foolish. We also failed to include permitting and regulatory reforms in the budget, which would have both short- and long-range impacts.

“This budget is simply unstainable and lacks the accountability taxpayers should expect from their elected officials.”
