Zimmerman to Co-Host Drug Awareness Event April 20
April 13, 2017
HARRISBURG – In an effort to help educate parents and all residents of the 99th District of the newest drug concerns and prevention methods, Rep. Dave Zimmerman (R-Lancaster) and Sen. Ryan Aument (R-Lancaster) will hold a Drug Epidemic Presentation and Expo on Thursday, April 20, from 6:30 - 8p.m., at the Ephrata Main Theatre, 124 E. Main St., Ephrata.
“Representatives of local law enforcement, the county’s Drug Task Force and social service organizations will be on hand to offer their expertise and resources that are available,” Zimmerman said. “You will learn to recognize signs of drug use and addiction, and lock boxes to keep prescriptions out of the wrong hands will be available. You will also hear fist hand from families and individuals who have overcome addictions.”
In 2015 in Pennsylvania, per the Pennsylvania Coroner’s Report, there were 3,505 overdose deaths. The number of overdose deaths exceeds those caused by car accidents and guns combined. Thus, the greatest public health threat in Pennsylvania is drug addiction and related overdose deaths.
On average, more than 4,000 Pennsylvania adolescents from ages 15-17 are admitted to state-funded drug and alcohol treatment programs each year, according to the Commonwealth’s Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs.
